JEAN T. WOOD
November 28, 1916 - February 3, 2009

Jean T. Wood passed away in Fountain Hills at the age of 92.  She was born in  Alton, Illinois.  Jean graduated from the University of Colorado in 1938, and later did graduate work at the University of  Colorado, Claremont Graduate University, UCLA and San Diego University.  She moved to San Diego in 1942.  In 1984 she moved to Scottsdale where she resided until a few months ago when she moved to Fountain Hills.  When she first moved to San Diego in 1942 she was employed as an instructor at the Ryan School of Aeronautics.  Between 1943 and 1960 she worked as a teacher and administrator in the San Diego City School District.  She was a Vice Principal at Point Loma High School from 1952 and 1960.  From 1962 until her retirement in 1977 she was the head counselor at the Centre City Adult School in the community college district. 

She was active in San Diego in the San Diego Women's Club, the La Jolla Woman's Club, the Linares Chapter of the DAR  (Regent 1982-1984) the La Jolla DAR, the American Association of University Women, the California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners, the Board of Commissioners of the San Diego  Public Library, the Republican Women's Club and the Soledad Club.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

She was also active in Scottsdale in the Grand Canyon Chapter of DAR, the Colonial Dames XVII Century, president of the Paradise Republican Women's Club in 1987, president of the Friends of the Valley 1987-1989 and the Western Greeters.  She was a member of the Valley Presbyterian Church.  Jean is the widow of John W. Wood, who for many years was a supervisor in the San Diego Park and Recreation Department. He passed away in 1976.  She is survived by her brother, James R. Taggart of Scottsdale, two nieces and one nephew.  The family requests donations to the San Diego Public Library. 
      


HELEN HAGAN

July 20, 1920 - January 6, 2009

Helen (Schaeffer) Hagan, 88, passed away in Scottsdale.  She was born in Wichita, Kansas and after marrying George Hagan lived in Kansas, Oklahoma and California before moving to the Scottsdale /Paradise Valley in 1966.  Helen immediately fell in love with the climate and the people. 

Helen started a successful career in real estate in 1968, later becoming a Broker.  She owned El Dorado Realty in Scottsdale for a number of years before retiring.  Helen's artistic talents led her to drawing and working with clay.  She and her sister, Marge, have created many beautiful and unique pieces of pottery.  Helen loved attending the Republican Women's Club meetings. 

Helen is survived by her sister, Marge; her son, Ron; four grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.  The family suggests donations in memory of Helen go to the Alzheimer's Association.   


  MARY BARON
November 4, 1926 - February 7, 2008

Mary (Petruska) Baron, 81, recently returned to live at her Scottsdale home in the loving care of her daughter, Nancy. Born in Carteret, New Jersey, she later moved with her husband, Edward, to Cincinnati, Ohio for 15 years and then spent over 30 years in Paradise Valley. She is survived by six children and 10 grandchildren.

During the years she devoted to nurturing her large family, she was not only involved in many activities and clubs, but she often served in leadership roles. She was PTA President, Paradise Republican Women's Club President in 1992 and served on various committees at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley.

After earning her master's degree in English, Mary work enthusiastically for most of her life. She taught elementary and high school and various classes at Scottsdale Community College, she was secretary of the Town of Paradise Valley and the American Lutheran Church headquarters in Scottsdale.

Mary loved politics, traveling and going out to lunch. We will remember her especially for the ease with which she made friends, of which she had many, and her willingness to consider the needs of others first. Mary will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives she touched.



CALVIN MORNS HOLMAN
March 30, 1941 - December 28, 2007

Cal Holman, 76, of Scottsdale died December 28, 2007. He was born and raised in Topeka, Kansas. He attended Topeka public schools, Harvard College AB and Stanford Graduate School of Business-MBA. Cal married Elizabeth Jordan in Tucson, Arizona in 1956 and then moved to Chicago, Illinois. They moved their family of four back to Phoenix at 1961. While working in the banking industry, Holman taught classes in computer software at ASU, where he was president of the Systems Management Association. He was a member of the Valley Presbyterian Church since 1961 where he served as a Deacon.

In 1974 he was elected to the Arizona State House of Representatives and served for ten years. While in the House he was chairman of various committees. Cal remained active in political matters and was a member of the Scottsdale Sunrise Rotary with perfect attendance for five years. Holman retired recently as president of the Scottsdale Republican Forum He was a member of the Men's Auxiliary of the Paradise Republican Women's Club. Everyone from PRWC had an opportunity to visit with him at the November 3, 2007 fall fundraiser in Paradise Valley.

Holman is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth, and two children who live in Phoenix and Georgia. The family suggests donations in memory of Cal to Scottsdale Sunrise Rotary Foundation - Cal Holman Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 5917, Scottsdale, AZ 85261. A Service of Celebration of his life was held on Thursday, January 3, 2008 in the Sanctuary at the Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley.
