History of TARS
Lois Fitch, a former high school history teacher, started the Teenage Republicans over 30 years ago. She felt young people were on the outside of the political process and decided to find a way to include them. Fitch started the Saguaro High School TARS Club in Scottsdale and within three months TARS had 60 members.
The success of the Saguaro Club got the attention of the Arizona Republican Party. Fitch asked to take TARS throughout Arizona. As a result she became the State TARS Advisor, a role she still maintains today. She is coordinator of the AzFRW Youth Organization.
TARS is a youth-led organization challenging teens to become involved in their local, state and national processes. TARS across the nation sway elections, gain first-hand knowledge of the political process, develop leadership skills and perform community service acts in their communities. TARS are our nation's greatest hope for the future.
Presently, the 20 TARS Clubs statewide are mainly on high school campuses. One of the TARS Clubs is home-schooled. Like AzFRW, TARS has a state federation with state officers elected each year at their state convention. AzRW clubs help finance their trips to the National Leadership Conference by donating money to their scholarship fund. The National Leadership Conference is the training ground for TARS and every eligible TAR in Arizona should be able to attend this leadership training experience.
You can help TARS finance their trips to the National Leadership Conference by sending money to the TARS Scholarship Fund. For contributions, please make checks payable and mail to:
