History of TARS
Lois Fitch, a former high school history teacher, started the Teenage Republicans over 30 years ago. She felt young people were on the outside of the political process and decided to find a way to include them. Fitch started the Saguaro High School TARS Club in Scottsdale and within three months TARS had 60 members.
The success of the Saguaro Club got the attention of the Arizona Republican Party. Fitch asked to take TARS throughout Arizona. As a result she became the State TARS Advisor, a role she still maintains today. She is coordinator of the AzFRW Youth Organization.
TARS is a youth-led organization challenging teens to become involved in their local, state and national processes. TARS across the nation sway elections, gain first-hand knowledge of the political process, develop leadership skills and perform community service acts in their communities. TARS are our nation's greatest hope for the future.
Presently, the 12 TARS Clubs statewide are mainly on high school campuses. Two of the TARS Clubs are home-schooled. Like AzFRW, TARS has a state federation with state officers elected each year at their state convention. AzRW clubs help finance their trips to the National Leadership Conference by donating money to their scholarship fund. The trip this year is July 19-26, 2008 and will be held at the Holiday Inn Eisenhower Metro in Old Alexandria, Virginia.
The National Leadership Conference is the training ground for TARS and every eligible TAR in Arizona should be able to attend this leadership training experience. One of the speakers at last year's conference was Tony Blankley, the editorial page editor of the Washington Times. In his column dated July 18, 2007, he writes:
"A couple of days ago I gave a speech to a banquet room full of Teenage Republicans at their annual Washington convention. This was a light of hope in an approaching darkness. Coming from across the country, they were energetic, full of good cheer and remarkably well informed on the issues of the day. I was grilled in the Q&A with questions as deeply informed, sharp and penetrating as any I get when doing television political shows. And they had an attribute one doesn't encounter every day in Washington. They actually cared and had seriously studied the substance of the policies and events."
For over 30 years the Arizona Teenage Republicans (TARS) program has taught solid values and trained young men and women to be our next generation of leaders as demonstrated by one of our own members from the Men's Auxiliary: DAVID SCHWEIKERT (Saguaro TARS) elected to Arizona State Legislature, served as Majority Whip, Treasurer of Maricopa County and is presently a candidate for Congress from District 5.
